As I am from Asia, many of my American friends ask me how to cook rice. But most of them do not have a rice cooker, that is why, in my today’s recipe I am writing about How to cook rice without a Rice Cooker. Cooking rice without a rice cooker is easy and can be done with just a pot and a stove. Here’s a recipe to cook rice without a rice cooker:
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of rice
- 1 and ¾ cups of water (if you use a rice and water ratio of 1:2 that would not be a problem)
- Pinch of salt (optional)
Note, you can buy rice from any nearest convenient shop, there are many varieties of rice you may find. Or you can shop from Amazon.
Instructions to cook rice without a Rice cooker:
- Rinse the rice in a fine mesh strainer under cold water until the water runs clear. This removes excess starch and impurities.
- Place the rice in a pot and add 1 and ¾ cups of water. Add a pinch of salt if desired.
- Bring the water to a boil over high heat.
- Once the water has reached a rolling boil, reduce the heat to low and cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid.
- Allow the rice to simmer for about 18-20 minutes, or until all the water has been absorbed and the rice is tender.
- Turn off the heat and let the rice rest, covered, for another 5-10 minutes to steam and fluff up.
- After the resting period, remove the lid and use a fork to fluff the rice and separate any clumps.
- Serve hot as a side dish or as the base for your favorite rice-based meal.
Pro Tips:
The ratio of water to rice may vary slightly depending on the type of rice being used. Check the package instructions for specific ratios and cooking times.
Avoid lifting the lid or stirring the rice during the cooking process, as this can release steam and affect the cooking time.
If the rice is not fully cooked after the initial 18-20 minute cooking time, add a splash of water and continue cooking for an additional 2-3 minutes until tender.
